On the heels of the Gallery WordPress theme release, which continues to see loads of downloads and numerous showcase sites popping up across the interwebs I am very excited to release a shiny set of 20 social media icons that you can use commercially released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 United States License (see end of post for full details or visit the Licensing page for more info.

Small Potato Out of Hiding: An Interview with Tung Do
If you’ve been involved with WordPress the past few years, odds are you know Tung Do (a.k.a. Small Potato), who ran WPDesigner.com until it was sold last year to deadbeat owner Pawel Ciszewski for $66,000. SP made the decision to leave the WordPress community while frustrated WordPressers watched WPDesigner sit for months with no trace of Pawel or SP to be found. It has been a year since all this went down and I thought it might be nice to catch up with SP and chat about how everything went down and what he’s been up to since last year. If you have any questions you’d like to ask, leave them in the comments and he may just stop by and answer them at some point. (more…)

Elsewhere on the Web: Flippin’ Pixels with Pixelflips.com
From time-to-time I write for other blogs on the interwebs. Most recently I’ve been writing design critiques on PleaseCritiqueMe.com, a design critique blog that helps mentor other designers by addressing flaws and offering expert advice for websites that have asked for another opinion. The most recent critique I’ve written is on PixelFlips.com, the web design shop of Phillip Lovelace, a designer from the US, now living in Germany.

Why IE6 Update is a Terrible Idea

By now, you’ve probably seen IE6 Update, which is a javascript file you can include on your site that provides IE6 users with a message that appears to be a system or browser toolbar that provides users with critical information and a link to a required update (really it is just a link to download the latest IE browser). Recently Paul Boag recorded a short rant on AudioBoo which was very politely disagreed with by a user named Japh who believes the tactic is perfectly acceptable.

Gallery 1.1 Now Available
This post is outdated. The Gallery theme is now available from my theme company, UpThemes. You can download it here. Also, be sure to check out Gallery Pro, the professional version of the popular free Gallery theme.
With the “smashing” success of Gallery 1.0 I am happy to announce the release of version 1.1, which includes quite a few changes, including a custom write panel (shown below), bugfixes for IE6 (mainly the navigation menu), and other bugfixes. As always, you need to grab and upload both the Gallery and Thematic themes.

Gallery, a Thematic Child Theme
This post is outdated. The Gallery theme is now available from my theme company, UpThemes. You can download it here. Also, be sure to check out Gallery Pro, the professional version of the popular free Gallery theme.
Gallery is a beautiful showcase-style WordPress theme built on the Thematic framework as a child theme.
Widescreen Video Embedding with Simple Video Embedder Plugin
Thanks to Jason Schuller’s easy-to-implement video embedding plugin, Gallery now supports video embedding from popular video sites like YouTube and Vimeo, even allowing you to add your own custom code if not supported. This is an awesome addition to Gallery and I even created a new icon for posts with video so you can differentiate between regular posts and video posts. You will want to download Simple Video Embedder from Press75.com to take advantage of this beautiful plugin. I believe it is also available from WordPress.org, so you can install this via the WordPress admin, just search for the title and off you go.
Theme Options
The theme options page currently allows modification of the number of days a post is considered “new.” This is currently the only option, but will be expanded upon in future releases.
