Gallery 1.2 Released

gallery-1.2-preview

IMPORTANT: Upgrading from earlier versions of Gallery requires removal of /gallery/ theme folder due to removal of page templates in prior versions of Gallery.
IMPORTANT: Gallery 1.2 only works with Thematic 0.9.5. Make sure to download and upgrade to Thematic 0.9.5 first.

It’s been a while since I’ve released any updates for Gallery and I’m sure some of you have been wondering what’s going on. In the past month, I’ve been working with Ian Stewart and Chris Gossman, lead developers for Thematic, to help improve both the amazing Thematic framework and the awesome Gallery theme at the same time. After sending the theme off to Chris, he made some changes to Thematic that allowed us to remove ALL PAGE TEMPLATES from Gallery, thereby isolating all the functionality in the functions.php. I really appreciate Chris and Ian for being so flexible and open to changing things up with Thematic for child theme developers and can’t express my full gratitude for their help with this release. That being said, there are a number of changes and enhancements in Gallery 1.2.

Widescreen Video Embedding with Simple Video Embedder Plugin

Thanks to Jason Schuller’s easy-to-implement video embedding plugin, Gallery now supports video embedding from popular video sites like YouTube and Vimeo, even allowing you to add your own custom code if not supported. This is an awesome addition to Gallery and I even created a new icon for posts with video so you can differentiate between regular posts and video posts. You will want to download Simple Video Embedder from Press75.com to take advantage of this beautiful plugin. I believe it is also available from WordPress.org, so you can install this via the WordPress admin, just search for the title and off you go.

Theme Options Page

Another thing I wanted to get out there was a theme options page that allows you to adjust some items being used by the Gallery theme, the most important of which is the number of days to keep posts as new in order to show the “New” icon over the thumbnails. This is currently the only option, but I wanted to get the page done so I can add more customizable fields in the future as needed.

Added Single-Level Drop-Down Styles

drop-down-support
This may seem pretty basic and very 1.0, but it was overlooked in previous versions and now you may add sub-categories with great joy and zeal. Enjoy.

Updated CSS & Image Sizes

A lot of people had issues either with thumbnails not being styled properly after changing their homepage to a single page or something similar and also with the size of the “Full Image” being set at 500×375. With this update, you no longer are required to use a fixed 500×375 image. As long as it is LESS THAN 500px wide, it will show up properly, anything larger and it will jack up the page. You asked for it, I gave it to you, don’t be a fool. Stay in school. Or something. In addition, the guys from Thematic added a “not-singular” class to their list of class names for pages in order to satisfy one of my needs with Gallery, the need to display thumbnail grids without having to specify 5 different page layout classes that could possibly change or be broken at any time. This basically fixes a bug in Gallery which was caused by an inflexibility in Thematic, which was fixed in the latest Thematic release.

Removed all Page Templates from Theme Folder

Basically, with the latest version of Thematic, Gallery does not need ANY page templates to function properly, instead utilizing ‘functions.php’ to insert, modify, and remove stuff from Thematic as necessary. This means you can upgrade Thematic or Gallery independently, without worrying about breaking either of them (hopefully).

NOTE: When upgrading Gallery, you will need to COMPLETELY REMOVE THE OLD GALLERY THEME FOLDER.

New Gallery Demo Site

Previously, I had been directing traffic to MixCSS as the official demo site for Gallery. However, with the updated version not actually going live on MixCSS just yet it didn’t make sense to continue directing people there. For a live demo of the actual Gallery theme as it appears on a new installation, check out chris-wallace.com/gallery. This will be the “official” demo as long as Gallery exists going forward, always staying up-to-date with the current version.

Wrapping Up

So there you have it, an updated version of Gallery. I’d like to thank Ian Stewart and Chris Gossman for their support of this theme and for providing the rock-solid Thematic Framework, which basically kicks all other frameworks’ butts, especially Thesis, which blows (actually, I’ve never used it, I’m just trying to start a fight :) .

Comments? Rock them out below and I will try to answer them, though I will admit due to a high level of comments and emails I may never respond to you. However, I do read all comments, which is good.

I didnt realise that the thumbnails were going to be 125 x 125 small since the demo version shows them to be much bigger.

Shouldnt the demo of this theme be displaying the default theme settings? I have no idea how to change these thumbnail settings and it looks like no help is being provided to others who have the same problem. I feel like I have wasted my afternoon with this theme which is a shame, as it is really nice.

  2. stan says:

Chris, how to resize the thumbnails like in mixcss.com?

  3. mike says:

help! i tried to upload it following your instructions and I keep geteting this message in the WP themes page:
    Gallery, a Thematic child theme
    Template is missing.
    Stylesheet is missing.

    what am i doing wrong?

  4. Felix J says:

    Hi mike

    I got it succesfully installed.

First install wordpress like normal. Then upload both the gallery theme and the thematic framwork in the Same folder (themes folder). After that you just need to activate the gallery theme and it should be working…

It worked for me by doing like this.

I hope it could be to any help.

  5. mike says:

  8. julia c. says:

  9. Fábio L. M. says:

That’s a good theme.. But how can I put a sidebar on it ? (In the right side of course)

  10. Felix J says:

    Hello

I have been asking the following question at the themeshaper.com forum and at the wordpress.org forum, but I haven’t got an answer. :(

    Please…… someone help me.

This is what I want to do…

I want to add this code:

to: http://xn--bokmrken-3za.net/blogger/ (all post pages) directly under “http://www.blogger.com” with a line between them…

I dont understand where to edit. I looked at the page.php and the single.php file in the thematic folder, but just got confused.

I have read the tutorials at themeshaper, but I still dont understand, how to do this customization I am trying to do…

There is also one other thing… The search box goes “outside” the theme. Here:

    http://xn--bokmrken-3za.net/lagg-till-bokmarke/

How can I fix it by making it shorter as it doesn’t look too good. I see this problem in FF 3.5

    Thanks…

  11. Felix J says:

Hmm, for some reason the code snippet disapeared.

Well this code I want to add..

  12. monica l. says:

chris, how close are you to releasing the next update?

  13. Felix J says:

Ok, I succeeded with the customization.

    I got 2 questions though.

    Reffering to my earlier statement

“When clicking on for example “Other” in the upper menu I can see “Internet Test Category Test Category 2″ in a long black rectangle for a pretty short while, directly under the main menu.” I get the same problem at my website…

    How can I fix it?

Also, how to make the search type-box little shorter?

    Thanks

  14. justina long says:

you can forget about getting support for this theme felix.
its free and there is no support. i offered to pay for someone to help me with the CSS and coding and no one replied. i guess all these designers are RICH, here while there is 11% unemployment in the USA. go figure.

  15. justina long says:

also, it makes it even more complicated that there are 2 themes for this. heck, i have no idea how to make changes and there is little to no documentation on how to do it for beginners. i hope the new version comes out soon, i am about to just more on to a different theme as this one will be a problem to keep updated for non-programmers. its too bad because it is a beautiful theme.

  16. Hi Justina, I apologize if you think it is rude to offer free themes with little-to-no support. I wish I had the time to reply to everyone individually. I really do. I receive at least 10 comments or emails per day just asking for help with the theme. Some I can answer, others I cannot.

The next Gallery theme will be released very soon and it will be a Gallery Pro theme, WITH commercial support. That means you pay one price for the theme then are entitled to support forever.

Now, there will be some who will complain about this decision and others who will praise it, because it means they will be able to get answers to their questions in a timely and professional manner.

I want to be able to offer support, but I literally cannot keep up with every request that comes in for the free version, I just can’t do it. It’s important to find a balance, and I think the balance is offering a paid version. That way the people who rely on this theme for part of their income can rely on a certain level of support when they need it.

  17. justina long says:

chris, thx for the reply. i dont think i was clear — i was telling felix that there is really no support for the theme BECAUSE it is free. I love the theme and have no problem paying for support. my rely to him was so he wouldn’t be sitting around waiting for a reply, because of my experience that no one would be replying to his request.

i understand your time is valuable and thank you for all your work and for sharing.

one thing i still dont understand is why no one wants to make money on the side for helping out people who dont know how to make adjustments to the code. t he only ones i have found are programmers in india and i would rather keep the jobs in the US., u know what i mean? anyway, thx for the reply.

how much will the new theme cost? gotta start saving up! ;)

  18. Great talk between Chris and Justina…
I do agree with Chris on everything he said and I am hoping that there will be a smooth automatic update feature to upgrade to the Pro edition while preserving the template customization code. If there would be a wizard-like approach, when activating the Pro theme, that will ask if current page template customizations should be rewritten or added into the new one.

Chris, can you give us some spoilers on what to expect in the Pro edition?

    Thanks!!!

  19. E says:

    Chris,

    Great theme.

Have there, or will there be, any changes to functions.php?

I’ve seen your file on github, and compared .js and .css to others using this theme and all is the same. However, I cannot get the slider effect on the thumbnails to work properly. I have tested this on a clean WP install with zero plug ins and the problem persists… Functions.php seems to be the logical issue at this point

Any insights or ideas are much appreciated. LMK if you have an Amazon list ;)

    Best,
    E

  21. Johnny says:

Just a quick question, when you have childen categories under parent categories there seems to be a problem in the nav where categories totally dissapear or child categories appear on the nav instead of from the dropdown menu.

If a paid version of this excellent theme comes out would love to get it if there is support!

once again well done, excellent work!

  22. Felix J says:

Johnny you can fix the categories I guess by doing the following:

In the functions.php file (Inside the theme folder)

    Look for this:

(I hope the code will be visible this time…)

Change the number “7″ to whatever number you want depending on how many categories you want to be shown.

  23. Felix J says:

Nope, I dont understand why the code is invisible…… Well inside the functions.php file look for something like; php wp list categories (Close to the top of the file) Change the number “7″ to whatever you want.

  24. Johnny says:

    Hey Felix,

Thanks alot I will give it a go and see if it works!

  25. Johnny says:

    WOW, Thats great, works perfectly!
    Thanks so much.

  26. Matt says:

Im sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but I am still kind of new. I have been digging through this for about 3 hours now and I cant find where to change the colors of the fonts. I want to change the color of the post title and content. Also the color for the about and rss at the top of the pages. Any help will be much appreciated please!!!
BTW, this is a great theme and thank you!

  27. Felix J says:

Matt have you looked in your style.css in your “gallery” theme folder?

  28. Matt says:

Yes, I have gone through that, I have already created a custome background and inserted it and made a few other changes. I don’t know exactly what to look for for the font color.
I went through checking the color codes that I saw to see if I could find the one that made the light grey color the theme was using but was unable to find it. I’m just not completely sure where to go to edit the color of the title, content, comments, or where it says rss and about. I know I can do some research to find this out but after reading through the comments everyone seemed helpful so I thought I would just to to the source. Thanks again!

  29. TO ALL THAT ARE LOOKING TO CHANGE THE FONT COLORS: Install ColorZilla Firefox extension, pick the color you want to change, copy its Hex number to clipboard, then Find/Replace in gallery CSS. You’d better download the CSS file and edit it locally instead of editing it directly into WP Admin.

  30. Chris Stewart says:

urgh! ~wonders if we will ever get resolution on the thumbnail issue~ would love to change it to something larger like we see on mixxcss. Has anyone hacked the template and figured this out yet??

  31. Mr. Stewart, I just released a new version that allows you to change the thumbnail size to whatever you want.

    List of features here.

  32. Chris Stewart says:

lol! i just saw that and went der! Thanks Chris =)

  33. Adam says:

Chris The theme is awesome! But I have a big problem I think the problem comes from the categories.. I want to use subcategories too. As i experienced I can use just 7 categories when I creat a new an older disappears :( .

    Chris what should I do?

    Best Regards,
    Adam

  34. Adam says:

Ohh I jsut fixed it !xD Thanks Felix J !!!!

    Kind Regards,
    Adam

  35. DavidDell says:

    Hey,

    Love the theme! Brilliant work!

Just wondering how I go about removing the slider text thing, and just have it placed under the image?

    Thanks mate!

  36. Belal Ahmed says:

    Hi,

I just wanted to point out that when you go to the about page the search box is too big. Also is it possible to add a search box on the home page? Instead of the tagline? Also is there any way to make the boxes bigger? or make the text on the boxes scroll?

Thank you for the theme! I might update to the pro version if I can make $25 from my blog and how much do you charge for custom made themes?

  37. Simon Wells says:

I am in the process of setting up a site using both Thematic and Gallery, it can be seen here: http://welcome.to/supergallery.

I have a couple of issues, some already reported.

    1) Not all widget (aside) positions work. I tested using just a standard text widget.

    2) Search facility would be good to appear up in the header, but have been unable to find a way to do it. Even if the standard search allowed the submit button to appear alongside the form rather then underneath, that would be a help.

    3) How is it possible to get the twitter/delicous links to appear under the posts?

There seems to be a lot of supportive people using this theme, that would also be willing to pay for upgrades, perhaps it could be considered to run a poll on the most important user upgrades and have them paid to be implemented.

    Keep up the good work.

  38. Simon Wells says:

Just added TWITTER link to nav section, to left side of the RSS link.

    How?

    1) Added: #page-menu #page-nav li.twitter a{
    padding-left: 20px;
    background: url("images/ico-twitter.png") no-repeat left center
    }
to the Gallery style.css, under the RSS in line 273.

    2) Uploaded file ico-twitter.png, this is a 16×16 png file.

    3) Modified the Gallery functions.php after line 29 to include: Twitter

  39. Simon Wells says:

For some reason, item 3 in my list above did not post correctly, so I try again.

    Twitter

Alternatively, copy line29, the RSS entry and paste it to line30.
Change li class="rss" to li class="twitter" to call the css for twitter as made in item 1.
    Then change the a href="" to a href="http://twitter.com/YOURUSERNAME"

Hope that helps, if not, let me know.

  40. Simon Wells says:

I have started a tutorial for installation, adding images and will also roll out modifying colours, images etc, plus adding in additional plugins.

Take a look at http://welcome.to/supergallery and checked out the Design pages.

    feedback most welcome.

Any idea, what I can do?
    Thanks.

  42. Christina says:

According to my comment right above: I do have the newest gallery and thematic download, and I still have the error concerning the shortening url like James in June 22. Your (Chris) comment of the code (from June 23) is still in the new function.php, but it still produces the error in the single posting page.
