10 Greatest WordPress Themes Ever

10-greatest

I love WordPress. That’s why I put together my list of the 10 greatest WordPress themes ever. I tried to avoid having too many “frameworks” and obviously excluded my own themes, Gallery, DesignFolio+, and Absynthe, which could possibly have made the list (in my dreams). Please enjoy and as always, add your own suggestions and omissions in the comments.

A Little Old School, A Little New

scratched-up

If you visited my blog 6 months ago, you would have seen a theme similar to the one you see today. I transitioned away from this theme to work on a new Lifestream-style theme that I planned (and still plan) to release on ThemeForest. Now that the development for that theme is complete, I have redesigned this site, though, a lot of what you see you would have seen 6 months ago. The new theme is called “Scratched Up” for obvious reasons. I plan on making subtle updates over the coming weeks to make everything really gel. I hope you enjoy and if you don’t, please tell me why in the comments as I like to know these things. Word.

Gallery 1.2 Released

gallery-1.2-preview

IMPORTANT: Upgrading from earlier versions of Gallery requires removal of /gallery/ theme folder due to removal of page templates in prior versions of Gallery.
IMPORTANT: Gallery 1.2 only works with Thematic 0.9.5. Make sure to download and upgrade to Thematic 0.9.5 first.

It’s been a while since I’ve released any updates for Gallery and I’m sure some of you have been wondering what’s going on. In the past month, I’ve been working with Ian Stewart and Chris Gossman, lead developers for Thematic, to help improve both the amazing Thematic framework and the awesome Gallery theme at the same time. After sending the theme off to Chris, he made some changes to Thematic that allowed us to remove ALL PAGE TEMPLATES from Gallery, thereby isolating all the functionality in the functions.php. I really appreciate Chris and Ian for being so flexible and open to changing things up with Thematic for child theme developers and can’t express my full gratitude for their help with this release. That being said, there are a number of changes and enhancements in Gallery 1.2.

The Fallacy of Page Zooming

A response to Cameron Moll's blog post, "Coding like it's 1999." Drew McLellan rebuts the idea of reverting back to using pixels to size text in your CSS. Definitely a good read.

Introducing Typekit

A new solution for web font embedding has emerged with much fanfare and enthusiasm from designers, developers, font foundries, and type designers alike. I'm not sure this is the silver bullet solution to cure all our font embedding woes, but it certainly shows how desperate we are for a simple solution.
